Returning for a third year, this unique event was held in the 'Old Town' & ' Mile Straight' of Leicester with the finish area relocating to The Newarke adjacent to Castle Park. Along with the Elite race, the final round of the British Cycling Elite Road Series, was a Cat 234 support race which fielded some of the Beeston Cycling Club's best talent.
Carl, Stewart, Grieg, Chris and Phil pitched themselves against a full 60 strong field for this 50min race.
The team had a mixed warm up as getting to the car park with the diversions and a road traffic accident slowed ingress to the HQ. We managed one lap together to view the circuit. The circuit was unchanged from last year and it claimed its first victim during this slow lap. A rider got one of the many chicanes wrong and went into the barrier and crashed. As positioning is key in these town centre races. As such as we neared the start line with 6mins to go we had a good position and didnt want to risk loosing it by riding another lap.
The race was led away under the neutralised flag until we hit the Western Boulevard. Attacks came thick and fast with many riders trying to get into a break. Grieg had done well to work his way up to the front and had an attack. Carl attacked shortly after. Phil didn't attack, he did not have good legs. 50mins is a very short race. It passed very quickly.
As we entered the last lap we were all together. Carl tried one more attack but he didnt get away. Phil had sat in all race watching the proceedings. The layout of the circuit meant that a traditional bunch sprint would be dangerous and a good result would be more luck than judgement. With 3 corners to go, Phil attacked. He led in the home straight and tried to push on for the win. Unfortunately his legs let him down and 2 riders came passed. Afterward Phil said he felt tired and only had one match to burn so he thought he would go long and see what happens. He certainly looked happy with 3rd on the podium.
Many thanks to all the sponsors allowing this adventure to continue.
Top picture, Phil is sitting in behind Carl Dyson and Carl Sturgen (white top). Bottom Picture is Phil sprinting for 3rd just pipping Corey from BRC. Its good to have two Beeston clubs in the mix throughout the season.
